I'm on the Steering Group of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility, which locates counselling and psychotherapy in social, political, ecological, and economic contexts. PCSR is a founder member of Partners for Counselling and Psychotherapy, whose aim is "To hold open a space to protect counselling and psychotherapy from restrictive standardisation and homogenisation, supporting the wide range of good practice in the field." Erin Stevens and I represent PCSR within the Partnership.
In response to COVID 19 PCP have created The Therapists Hub to keep all therapists up to date with the latest COVID-19 developments, and a list of resources.
Since 16 March I've been holding a free, daily 8am online drop-in for therapists offering peer problem solving, support and learning. Some of the things we've discussed so far are client isolation, team overwhelm, coping with massive technological changes and shifts of power, internet security, adapting practice, the opportunities and the demands that C19 makes for person centred therapists to dig deep into the model, renegotiating boundaries, and realising how much we already know.
These meetings are for therapists only and don't replace formal supervision. People who've attended have said they've enjoyed the sense of camaraderie and the opportunity to talk freely about some of the pressures that therapists suddenly find themselves faced with. Having the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other means that we come to more solid, thought-through, sustainable decisions.
The drop in is available daily until 30th March. The easiest way to join the discussion is via Twitter @clareslaney or to email me clareslaneycounselling@gmail.com
